Giant mushroom Germ!

Owen hasn't had much interest in drawing anything until recently, and only then he only draws Yoshis over and over. He's very good at Yoshis. The problem has been getting him interested in trying new things - except this week he came home from school with a drawing of Peter and the Wolf, plus a cat and a bird. Flabbergasted! He drew everything so well!

Today I asked him to draw me lots of things he hasn't drawn for me before. He decided to draw:
1) A family portrait. Me, the Boo, Zuzu, Owen, and the Mitten in that order. And the sun, natch.
2) A flower. Then I told him how to spell 'flower' and he carefully wrote it out.
3) A giant mushroom. No doubt influenced by the Mario universe. He specifically wanted to label it 'giant mushroom, exclamation point'.
4) A germ, 'really close up'. Ok, junior scientist. Or future sufferer of OCD.

SO CUTE! What were those drawn on? It looks like something to do with embroidery hoops (I have a tea towel with a rabbit on it that I drew and my grandmother embroidered when I was a little kid).

It's a 'magnadoodle', where you draw with a little magnetic pen and it pulls up iron filings to the surface, or some such. Then there's a slidey thing that erases the board and you can start over. It's good when your kid is drawing and you need a shower, but don't particularly want to come back to a wall full of magic marker. :)

LOVE. i'm especially fond of the germ.

and i thought they were cross stitch patterns at first, too. not a bad idea actually. a way to capture his artwork long term. i can see a series of framed stitchery on the wall. he'll take the art world by storm.
