Ok, so after spending a few hours perusing every beach town online from Maryland to Maine (thank you, you guys are fantastic!), then blowing all your wonderful recommendations and our careful research with an impulse trip to Priceline.com, we're now the proud owners of a sudden, cheap vacation to Portsmouth, NH.
$100 a night! Yay! Hotel kinda near the airport! Boooo. Oh well; there's a pool. We have a car. It'll be fine. Adventure!

Portsmouth is great. It also places you quite close to Newburyport, MA (also seaside) and Plum Island. The best beach in the entire state of MA (in my opinion) however is in Ipswich and is called Crane's beach. Really worth a visit and isn't that far -- Plus there is a wonderful estate open to the public.

Portsmouth is really nice and beautiful. Kitty point just a little drive away is where my beloved Aunt used to live. I was up there last mem day to visit her Widower husband. I still think of the magical place that it is. I think you'll have tons of fun. rent some bikes and ride around. the water is cold though. It's ME. bring bug spray too. ( when are you going?

Yay! You will love it, I guarantee it. When are you going? I will be in the area the first week of June visiting my dad. If you get a chance, check out the gallery/shop Nahcotta and tell me what you think. I will be showing some work there in August! Online it looks like it would be right up your alley anyway.

Have fun! I can't wait to hear about your adventures.

I would rather pay for a cheaper hotel and spend more money having fun. If you have a car, I am sure you'll be fine.

It's a cute little city - I've spent a bunch of time there. Years ago there was a great sushi place downtown, and a restaurant on a boat that was reputed to have good lobstah rolls. Great beaches, too. Have a great time, I'm envious! :D

I spent a lot of time in Portsmouth as a kid - it's a blast. A few things I would recommend that are fun:

- New Castle Beach. Wide, nice sand, family friendly, lots of cool rocks and tidal pools for Owen to explore.

- Chauncey Creek. Great restaurant hidden away off Route 1A with a big deck filled with picnic tables. Lobster tanks inside would be fun for Owen to check out, too. http://www.chaunceycreek.com/

- Downtown Portsmouth is really fun - check out the area by Strawberry Banke, where there is a nice wooden deck to walk along the waterfront.

- the Children's Museum in Portsmouth is great if it happens to rain

And this is TOTALLY random, but if you have a car, one of the best memories of my childhood is visiting this amazing huge playground behind Little Harbor School, near where my grandma used to live. It might not seem that great to you, but as a six year old, nothing was cooler - there is so much stuff to play on. Thought if Owen is feeling a little down lately it might be fun to take him to it.
