Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend  Next Entry
Watching the new baby calf behind our house stand up for the first time, Owen remarked that it was probably lighter than its mom for protection (I suppose he got this from brightly-colored bird discussions.) 'But who would eat a cow?' he said, and laughed like it was the most preposterous idea.
Uh, yeah. Dunno, kid. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go prune the cheeseburger tree.

I lol'd. That's adorable.

There's a real disconnect, especially in children, between the live animal and the burger they eat. The burger comes from a plastic pouch at the grocery store, surely it doesn't wander around a filed mooing first.

When I was a kid we used to visit a family friend who lived on a huge farm, and then go to the veal farm next door and play with the calves. The tiny stalls just meant that they couldn't get away from our stroking fingers. Years later the memory remains one of my most disturbing to look back on.

That's sad! And yeah, I like to think the cows and sheep in the field behind us will live to be happily elderly milk and wool producers and that's that.

Also, I guess it's good that O refused to try burgers at all. Still, I would like one once in a while!

Yeah, he still hasn't recovered from 'The Lobster Incident' when we vacationed in Maine, which resulted in not only having to buy him a plush lobster toy, but also elicits shrieking every time we pass a Red Lobster (and we don't even eat there).

I really think he believes his chicken nuggets and breaded fish sticks are what chickens and fish eat. If he knew the truth, he'd only be drinking soy milk. He already refuses all new food as is. :(

bwahaha! My youngest turned vegetarian at age eight - when he finally realized what was what. It made his mom's kitchen life rather difficult. He stayed a veggie-only eater until he fell in love at 30. New mate loves her chicken and beef, so he's been indulging for the last four years. Ain't love grand?

When I was a wee lad (through 3rd grade) we lived in NYC, and I loved tongue sandwiches. Tongue sandwiches, of course, came from the deli, and no doubt originated with their rye bread, etc. Then one day I was in the meat department and saw a tongue and the sudden shock hit that THAT (incredibly gross yet identifiable bovine body part) was what was sliced up in those yummy sandwiches. I probably didn't eat tongue again for 20 years (and, frankly, living outside of NYC it's fairly easy to not encounter tongue at all unless you go specifically looking for it).

oh man. so funny!

our friend totally took her 4 year old to a farm to see the whole process. she didn't take her in to see the cows butchered, of course, but I do think it is important to give kids that connection so they understand where their food comes from and even if you aren't vegetarian, it's still nice to honor that life- ya know?

Oh man. Wesley had a huge realization when it came to meat this weekend that resulted in a lot of tears. I was actually going to post about it so I would remember it. (I use my livejournal to remember lots of things, lol)
