Country livin'

It feels like summer hasn't really started yet, and yet it seems like it's almost over.

I've wasted two beautiful weeks puttering around the house and popping Advil, which sucks. I can get around slowly, but driving is no fun at all. I finally had to get in the car and go grocery shopping last night when M got home, and had zingy back twinges every time I step on the gas/brake. Not cool. I don't want to drive the kids around like this. :(
I really should have called the doctor days ago, but last time they told me to basically suck it up and wait, so what's the point? And now we've got family coming for the weekend, so too late. Complain, complain! Sorry. :)

Ok, children need breakfast...

what injury/problem do you have with your back? i injured mine a few years ago and it was one of the worst things.

I did something to it while cleaning/pulling weeds/etc one day, and spent about a week in bed and almost another week just taking it easy and not leaving the house. This happened a few months ago, too, and had it x-rayed and there was nothing conclusive re: disc problems or anything. It's gotta be something other than just 'I worked too hard', though. :(

I'm sorry you had back problems, too. What did you do to your back? Anything in particular that helped you recover?

sort of the same thing happened to me. I was getting dressed after a shower and lifted my leg to put my underwear on and something pulled in it. a few hours later I couldn't move off the couch without being in excruciating pain and had to call an ambulance. I spent the night in the ER and then got xrays and tests and what they found was I had two protruding discs in the sacral vertebrae which is right down the bottom. I also had a major sciatic flare so I was basically in pain in my back and legs because of the sciatic nerve. it took me months to recover and I had lots of physio for it but what helped the most was the heat treatment from the physio I think it's called Short Wave Diathermy (SWD). because of one of my other health problems my body doesn't respond well to painkillers so even for a simple headache I need codeine so for a bad injury? nothing except strong prescription stuff would work but no doctor thought it was necessary to give me anything strong so I had to use what works best for me which is heat. I saw a physio 1-2 a week and then once a week for about 3-4 months before I felt back to normal. the machine has a little attachment and it heats up and it sends waves right down to the muscles to relax them. I would then do some stretches and exercises during the week until my next appointment. it took ages to feel back to normal but once that happened and I discovered heat bags (wheat ones) I never use anything else. there are also gel ones but I swear by them for ANY pain. I use them when I have period pain and I get lower back pain from that too!

I would definitely try seek a second opinion and get them to thoroughly check things because if it's bad enough to have you in bed there is definitely an injury there. for management in the moment I'd invest in some heat bags if you don't already use or own any. they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. in fact I'm sitting with one on my lap now because I'm cold! I think you generally need a referral for a physio but I'd try chase one up anyway and say look the doctors can't find anything but something is obviously wrong can you help? the gentle exercises help with regain strength in the core muscles there and over time you slowly build them up again but it'll always be a weak point.

wow what a novel but hopefully it helped!

Wow, thank you for all of that! I'm sorry you went through all of that. I guess hearing my first doc say that the xray didn't show any disc damage so I should just go home and rest made me assume I was being a wuss or something. Obviously something is wrong there! I have a new doc anyway; maybe I will give her a call and perhaps I can have her refer me to someone. I don't want this to keep happening!

Thanks again! This makes me feel better.

no problems, i'm glad i can help. the first doctor i saw in the ER was so awful and just told me my weight was the problem and i'm like yeah how is that helpful??. i'd definitely second getting the mri like suggested below because they can't see everything on xrays. it's your body and you know what is happening so just perserve and hopefully they can find out what is wrong and get it treated asap.

I feel for you. My husband has what are called "bulging discs," and there isn't much to be done as he isn't yet a candidate for surgery. It's very painful for him, though. Don't know if you've had an MRI yet ... if I recall correctly the bulging discs can't be seen on an X-ray, but it's a very "popular" back ailment. I hope your back feels normal again soon.

Also, I feel my sympathy for you being distracted by the gorgeousness of that photo.

When this happened last time I wanted an MRI but they wouldn't give me one unless an initial xray showed a disc problem, hmn. I did change doctors since then, though, so I suppose I'd better see what she has to say.

I'm sorry your husband has to go through that! That sucks.

Ugh, that's awful. :( It must be something causing it, rather than you just pulled something or whatever and you need to suck it up and wait. :/ I really hope it gets better soon!!

Yeah, I mean, I know I was doing a lot of bending and lifting, but it wasn't like I was moving furniture or anything. You'd think that if it keeps happening that it must be something underlying, too, right? Thanks, lady. :)

The point is, you have to keep going to the dr. You cannot give up. "What's the point" is the worst thing you can do. Go and demand a fucking MRI. You know I know what I'm talking about. Keep going until you get some real care.

absolutely demand an MRI. Disc issues often do not show up on x-rays. I had multiple x-rays with dr's showing nothing- until someone finally listened to me about my pain and then did an MRI showing 3 herniated discs. if you are in this much pain- there is something going on, and especially since it is recurring.

i hope you feel better very soon!!!
