Discussion over a prospect.org article on redefining masculinity
There's a great deal to unpack with any stab at discussing gender and I'm not feeling especially on the ball at the moment. So rather than responding to the article and discussion directly I'm just going to mention that I'm not entirely down with the concept of discussing role models to begin with.
Rather than attempting to find a non-toxic archetype for modern cis-gendered males shouldn't we be discussing self-actualization in preference to adhering to another idea of what it is to be properly male? I realize that constructing identity is a lifelong project and can be based on approaching the buffet of behaviors, roles, and characters (real, mythical, fictional, or other) and dropping a few things onto your plate to see how you like them but do we want to have a conversation about new standards?
I'll just throw that out there and go stomp upstairs to see if they actually have the files they've been promising me all afternoon.

http://strawberrylemonadeblog.blogspot.com/2009/11/melbourne-artist-madeleine-stamer-is.html I so love these drawings by Australian artist Madeleine Stamer. When I first saw her work I was drawn to the bold and playful simplicity of each piece. They totally reminded me of a mix between Mexican paper cutouts and Chagall (fancy!).
An interview I read confirmed these influences: There are so many influences which fall into many categories. Nature, natural history, mythology, graffiti, Aboriginal art, European folk art, vintage toys and the decorative arts all play a big role. I love a bit of kitsch too, I guess the most significant artistic influences for my colour and line choice would be Picasso and Chagall. Culturally I am a sucker for folk art, particularly Mexican ceramics and traditional Mexican decoration and religious iconography. The Mexican culture has an instinctive way of including vibrant colour and mixing surreal elements in everyday life, it is a sensory delight! Excerpt from interview in Indie Art & Design
 Aren't they great?
To see more of Madeleine's work, or to purchase a giclee print for your very own, visit Little Circus Design. She also has a cute little blog here.

http://blog.craftzine.com/archive/2009/11/how-to_grown_up_hot_chocolate.html

Hot chocolate is a childhood classic. One of my fondest memories as a child was slurping half-melted whipped cream off the top of a warm mug of cocoa. I'd beg to have it right off the stove, but it was always too hot for gulping. Instead I'd have to sip it and then savor the cool whipped cream against my tongue. We all remember this moment as kids, right? As I have grown, however, my tastes have changed. What I like now is freshly beaten whipped cream, extra-rich chocolate, and, of course, amaretto. Adding a shot of liquor to this decadent treat pushes the experience over the top. It updates my warm childhood memories in a wonderfully grown-up way. I recommend making a double batch of this hot chocolate, and serving the kids first! Send them off to bed, then relax with your own unadulterated cup.

The Klutz Book of Balloon Twisting by Karen Phillips
Klutz.com
Ages 8 and up
I went through a serious balloon twisting phase as a kid, somewhere between my obsession with the steel drum and sewing purses. My parents got me a book and kit for making all sorts of things from these long, skinny balloons, but some of them were far too advanced for me. The Klutz Book of Balloon Twisting would have been perfect for me as a kid, since it has eleven kid-friendly projects that would be easy to make at a party or playdate. It comes with 40 balloons and a pump, which makes blowing up the balloons an absolute breeze. The book has hats, wands, swords, and fairy wings, which are perfect for girls and boys. If you're interested in getting your kids started on this fun craft or want to whip up some party toys but have never even made a balloon dog, this book is a perfect place to begin. For some more ideas of models to make, try Balloon Molecules.
Book Giveaway Time!
Three lucky CRAFT readers will each receive a copy of The Klutz Book of Balloon Twisting! Please make sure you include your email address in the comment form field (won't be published). It has to make toys easily accessible, without requiring endless (and messy) rooting in the bottom of cavernous toyboxes. It has to be easy enough to use that it motivates kids to pick up after themselves. And it has to be attractive enough that we can picture it eventually serving non-kid functions elsewhere in the house. Oeuf's Toy Store storage unit hits all three marks.

was it the ballpark nachos, covered in "squeezee" cheese, sour cream, jalapenos & tomatoes, or the can of tecate that i drank, that did me in? it was delicious at the time but i am paying for it now in the form of what can be charmingly referred to as "texas butt piss." some call it "bud mud" but the former has such a snazzy snap to it.
anyway, i went to the market today since i had to pick up my crazy pills (the dosage of which i'm tapering down yet again because i want to see how well i can do without them) and i got some button mushrooms. initially i was going to make a sauce to throw over some pasta but then i was all, "yo, fatty pants, you eat too much pasta as it is" so i decided to just sautee some chopped garlic and them before adding in some water, miso, juice of 1/2 lemon and thyme. blitzed the whole thing down with my immersion blender and served myself a bowl swirled with some soy milk. it's pretty good considering i made it on the fly.
also i sucked down a V8.
somebody here wants salt.
somebody here has PMS.
that somebody is me.
